  • Keep Important Items Above Ground Level

If a disaster event takes place and floods any areas of storage, it can leave a real mess. Make sure to keep important documents, inventory, tools, and electronics above ground level in case of flooding.

  • Backup All Data

Always, always, always backup your data! We live in a digital world and to lose digital data can quickly destroy a business. It is so important to keep your data in a cloud to ensure that you can always recover it. Local computer experts can help you with this if you need.

Fire, Smoke and Soot Breakdown

8/15/2022 (Permalink)

man standing in fire damaged kitchen Fire, smoke or soot damage? Call the professionals at SERVPRO of Moorhead!

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow for us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of [Douglas & Otter Tail Counties] will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire.

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

What is the Difference Between a Storm Watch and a Storm Warning

7/15/2022 (Permalink)

tornado in a field When a storm comes through your community, know the difference between a storm watch and a storm warning

A storm watch and a storm warning are different things. Many times we hear the radio or tv talk about a “watch” or “warning”, but do you really know the difference?

Storm Watch

A storm watch means that the weather conditions are favorable to it becoming severe weather, although no severe weather has been reported yet. This lets people know that they should prepare for severe weather. A storm watch can always turn into a storm warning.

Storm Warning

A storm warning means that severe weather has been reported and specific locations are announced. When a warning is reported, you should take shelter immediately to ensure your safety.

At SERVPRO of *Franchise* we are prepared for any type of storm damage that may come your way. Our crews are always ready and on standby when a storm rolls in. If you find yourself needing storm damage restoration services, give us a call!

Grilling Gone Wrong: Safety Tips on How to Avoid an Outdoor Fire Catastrophe

7/7/2022 (Permalink)

Deck destroyed by grill fire This photo is from an actual customer who had a grill fire. Fortunately, they called us and we were able to cleanup and fix the damage!

Grilling season is upon us! Who doesn’t love a good summer bar-b-que? Hot dogs, steaks, hamburgers… nothing beats a good grill out. That is if everything goes smoothly. Without following proper safety protocols, your deck or home could end up fried. Follow these 8 safety tips from First Alert to stay safe this grilling season:

  • Only use grills outside

It might seem like a good idea to set up your grill in your garage or under a balcony to stay in the shade or keep out of the rain. However, this is a major fire risk. Keep your grill in a place where there is plenty of ventilation.

  • Place your grill away from your home

Grills should always be at least 10 feet from home and other fire hazardous structures.

  • Make sure your grill is located on a flat, level surface

Your grill should not be on a slope or uneven surface. This could lead to the grill tipping over and easily starting a fire.

  • Check your grill for leaks

If you store your grill inside for the winter, you should always check it thoroughly before grilling season. Leaks in gas lines can cause propane or natural gas to build up while the lid is closed. Always open your lid before lighting.

  • Always clean your grill after use

Barbecuing regularly causes grease to build up. If not properly cleaned it can act as fuel and catch fire while the grill is in use.

  • Never leave a grill unattended while in use

You should never leave a grill alone while it is in use. High heat and open flames is a recipe for disaster if left unattended.

  • Wear appropriate clothing

When grilling food, wear clothes that won’t interfere while you are cooking. Loose articles of clothing are more easily caught on fire. If clothing does catch on fire, remember to stop, drop, and roll.

  • Keep a spray bottle and fire extinguisher on hand

Keep a spray bottle nearby while cooking in case small flames ignite and fire extinguisher incase of larger flames.

Smoke Damage in Moorhead Business?

3/16/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke is filling a room. We restore commercial fire damage 24-hours a day in Clay County.

Every smoke odor is not the same, and the smoke odor removal process will vary because every fire uses fuels unique to that fire event. For this reason, SERVPRO® of Moorhead’s technicians may use any of the following methods to remove smoke odor from your building.

  • Air Scrubber or Filter: Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system air scrubber or HEPA air purifier captures larger smoke molecules. There will still be some residual odor from smaller molecules or surface residues.
  • Ozone Generator: An ozone generator is a fast and highly effective smoke odor restoration method. These machines emit ozone, which follows the same paths through the air as smoke and oxidizes any residual traces in the air or on surfaces.
  • Thermal Fogging: An intensive treatment involving fogging machines. After residents evacuate, smoke cleaning professionals fill a structure with petroleum distillates that neutralize odors, and then they ventilate the area.
  • Hydroxyl Generator:These machines rely on ultraviolet light to generate hydroxyl radicals that eliminate smoke odors. It will take about three to five days of continuous operation to achieve the same results as a single ozone treatment.
  • Vapor Modification: This odor elimination method relies on aromatic compounds and a blower or fan to neutralize smoke odor.

Water Seepage in Moorhead Basement?

3/8/2022 (Permalink)

Water is seeping into a basement through cracks in the wall. We mitigate and restore water damage 24-hours a day in Clay County.

If you discover water in your Moorhead basement, SERVPRO® of Moorhead is Here to Help. ® Our technicians typically arrive within four hours of your call, and our fast emergency response time prevents secondary damage and more time-consuming and costly repairs in many cases.

There are five common causes for water seepage and basement leaks.

Lateral pressure: When the soil surrounding your basement absorbs water and expands, it creates stress on your basement walls, causing them to crack, allowing water to seep into the structure.

Hydrostatic pressure: Similar to lateral pressure, hydrostatic pressure can cause buckling and cracking of the walls and foundation of a house.

Poor landscaping: If the grade of the soil around your foundation runs towards your foundation, your basement can flood.

Clogged window wells: If your window wells are filling with water, your window wells may be improperly installed, or the drain is clogged.

Leaky pipes: Inspect your plumbing systems, starting with their entry into the basement to where it leaves, including the sewer line. Make repairs as required.

SERVPRO Ranks #1 in Category by Entrepreneur Magazine's 2022 Franchise 500

3/2/2022 (Permalink)

Franchise 500 #1 in Category Badge #1 in Restoration Services!

SERVPRO of Moorhead is proud to announce that SERVPRO has been recognized again as one of the best overall franchise opportunities by Entrepreneur magazine’s 2022 Franchise 500, the industry’s most comprehensive franchise ranking. Evaluated on categories such as growth, financial strength and stability, and brand power, SERVPRO was named the #8 overall franchise system, and #1 in the cleaning and restoration industry for the 19th consecutive year.

“SERVPRO is built on the foundation of outstanding customer service, industry-leading training and the success of following a proven system,” said SERVPRO CEO Rick Isaacson. “On behalf of the more than 1,900 SERVPRO franchises across the U.S. and Canada, we are honored by this recognition.

“The SERVPRO brand and its franchisees share a strong partnership, working together to set and achieve goals which have allowed us to grow each year for more than half a century despite the challenges many businesses have faced, especially over the past 18-24 months.”

“The past year has been one of the most challenging for businesses in recent memory, which made putting together our 43rd annual Franchise 500 list more enlightening than ever,” said Entrepreneur Editor in Chief Jason Feifer. “The companies named to this year’s list showed us how being resilient, supportive and nimble can help navigate extraordinary challenges and also underscore the grit and innovation that define entrepreneurship.”

SERVPRO franchise owners pride themselves on being “ready for whatever happens,” Isaacson said, which helped the company jump two spots from its #10 ranking in 2021.

“Our franchisees have a ‘never say no’ mentality, working together with other owners to make sure we are able to satisfy all of our customers’ and clients’ cleanup, remediation and restoration needs, which allows us to ‘Keep it Green,’ as we like to say.

“We pride ourselves on rushing in when others are running out – whether that is in response to a natural disaster such as a hurricane, flood or tornado; cleaning up after a home or business water or fire loss; or helping clean and sanitize spaces from unseen threats like COVID-19. Maintaining our position for nearly 20 years as the best franchise in our category on the Entrepreneur Franchise 500 list validates our long-standing strategy for growing our brand: invest in franchisee training and support and commit resources to continually improving our infrastructure.”

Water Heater Water Damage in Moorhead?

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

The temperature and pressure valve are adjusted on a water heater. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Clay County.

SERVPRO® of Moorhead offers this information from The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors for why professional maintenance of your water heater is essential:

Use a qualified service professional for the following:

  • Burners should be cleaned once a year for gas and oil-fired water heaters. Have the service professional inspect flues and vents for cracks or loose connections that could leak deadly exhaust gases.

  • Have a qualified plumber replace your anode rod once every two to five years

  • The service life of a temperature and pressure (T & P) valve is usually three years. Even if a T & P valve looks fine from the outside, manufacturers recommend they be removed and visually inspected for accumulations of corrosion deposits
  • Call a qualified plumber if your water tank is leaking.
    • If the T & P valve is discharging water or steam, the ONLY safe intervention is to remove the heat source by cutting off its fuel, if you can. For an electric heater, trip the circuit breaker; for a gas heater, shut off the gas.
    • If your water heater overheats, call a qualified plumber and allow the water heater to cool naturally. Never try to relieve the pressure yourself. Never add cool water to the tank, and never try to cool it by spraying it with a hose.

Water Shut-Off Valve Malfunction in Moorhead?

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

A water shut-off valve is shown. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Clay County.

Have you ever watched a home renovation show where someone accidentally drills through a pipe and causes water to flood a floor, and no one knows where the water shut-off valve is? SERVPRO® of Moorhead responds to many water damage emergencies each year. Knowing where the main water shut-off valve is and how to turn it off can make the difference between an inexpensive repair and a costly one!

Here is some information on locating and shutting off the main water shut-off valve:

Start by locating the main shut-off valve. The main cut-off valves are usually outdoors in warmer climates, and in colder climates, these valves are generally indoors. The water shut-off valves have either round wheel or lever handles.

It is important to note that if a valve is difficult to turn – DO NOT force it. Call a licensed plumber or the local public works authority for assistance.

  • Round wheel handle valves will turn off by turning the handle to the right (clockwise). A few turns should stop the wheel.
  • Handle valves should slowly be turned clockwise ¼ turn. The handle should no longer be parallel with the pipe, and it should stop at a ¼ turn.

Mold Infestation in Moorhead?

1/25/2022 (Permalink)

Mold is growing on a wall. We mitigate and remediate mold damage in Clay County.

When you find mold in your home or commercial business, it is often an indication of water damage. SERVPRO® of Moorhead’s technicians use advanced technology to locate the source of the water damage and will address the problem to discourage the mold from returning after the mitigation and remediation process has been completed. Here are some facts from our website about mold:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or air conditioning and heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed to ensure the mold does not return
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Severe Weather Warning in Moorhead?

1/11/2022 (Permalink)

Snow can be seen falling outside from a window. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Clay County.

SERVPRO® of Moorhead has been restoring storm-damaged properties in Moorhead for years. Here are some helpful definitions for severe weather watches and warnings from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration:

Watches are issued when conditions are favorable for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, or flash floods. If you are in a watch area, continue with normal activities and make plans to seek shelter if necessary.

Warnings are issued when severe weather has been reported or is imminent. Seek shelter immediately if you are in or near the path of the storm. Warnings are issued by county and city names. Make sure you know the name of the county in which you live and the cities that surround you. Updates are given until the immediate threat has ended.

Advance Information

The forecast and warning process begins one or more days ahead of time when the threat area is determined. Hazardous weather outlooks are issued early every morning and updated as conditions warrant.

If a Watch is Issued

Local weather offices are staffed with extra personnel. State officials are notified, and they pass the information to the county and local level. Counties and cities activate their spotter groups as the threat increases. Television and radio stations pass the word to the public.

Fireplace Fire in Sabin?

1/5/2022 (Permalink)

A fire is burning in a fireplace in a log cabin. We restore fire damage 24-hours a day in Clay County.

I remember coming across an old abandoned log cabin while backpacking in Wild River State Park. In front of the fireplace was an old bed frame, and I remember thinking that my bed would be in the same place if I lived in the Minnesota wilderness. Ice Dam Damage in Dilworth?

12/20/2021 (Permalink)

An ice dam is shown on a house. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Clay County.

SERVPRO® of Moorhead has been restoring storm damage for Dilworth residents for years. The University of Minnesota’s website has an excellent section on ice dams. Here is some information from their website:

Ice Dams

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas.

Immediate Action

  • Remove the snow from the roof
  • Use a roof rake or push broom to remove snow (may damage roofing materials)
  • In an emergency where water is flowing into the house structure, making channels through the ice dam allows the water behind the dam to drain off the roof
  • Hosing with tap water on a warm day will do this job
  • Work upward from the lower edge of the dam
  • The channel will become ineffective within days and is only a temporary solution

Long-Term Action

  • Make the ceiling airtight so no warm, moist air can flow from the house into the attic space
  • After sealing air leakage paths between the house and attic space, consider increasing the ceiling or roof insulation to cut down on heat loss by conduction

Holiday Decoration Fire in Sabin?

12/14/2021 (Permalink)

Christmas lights decorate the exterior of a home. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Clay County.

SERVPRO® of Moorhead responds to more fire damage emergencies than any other form of property damage in Sabin during the winter months. Here are some electrical safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Have all electrical work done by a qualified electrician
  • Only use one heat-producing appliance plugged into a receptacle outlet at a time
  • Major appliances should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet. Do not use extension cords and plug strips.
  • Arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) shut off electricity when a dangerous condition occurs. Consider having them installed in your home.
  • Use ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) to reduce the risk of shock. GFCIs shut off an electrical circuit when it becomes a shock hazard. They should be installed inside the home in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and basements. All outdoor receptacles should be GFCI protected.
  • Test AFCIs and GFCIs once a month according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Check electrical cords to make sure they are not running across doorways or under carpets. Extension cords are intended for temporary use. Have a qualified electrician add more receptacle outlets, so you don’t have to use extension cords.

Downspout Causing Water Intrusion in Barnesville?

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

A rain gutter and downspout is shown. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Clay County.

SERVPRO® of Moorhead responds to water damage emergencies in Barnesville every year. Although downspouts and rain gutters can divert rain away from a structure when installed correctly, they can do serious damage to a home when they are damaged or misaligned. Yikes! Here are some tips from home expert Bob Vila:

Inspect your rain gutters for visible signs of cracking. Use binoculars to inspect for smaller cracks. If you see extensive cracking, replacement is required.

Inspect gutter seams for damage where two horizontal sections meet.

Inspect your home’s paint job. If there is evidence of paint peeling, it may point to rain gutter failure. Check the section of the rain gutter closest to the paint damage for leaks. If there are more than a couple of leaks, you may want to replace the rain gutters.

Inspect your home’s exterior wood elements for rotting windowsills or door jambs. You may have clogged rain gutters or inadequate storm drainage.

Inspect the exterior of the home for mildew damage. If there is moisture accumulating around or near the foundation, mildew can grow. This is a sign your rain gutters are not working properly.

A closed garage door is shown. We restore storm damage 24-hours a day in Clay County.

Minnesotans know a thing or two about severe winter weather. SERVPRO® of Moorhead responds to many storm damage emergencies each year. Garage doors can be damaged in severe storms when strong winds blast into them, causing them to buckle and break under the pressure. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), there are steps you can take to protect your home from wind damage:

  • Inspect your garage door to make sure it can withstand strong winds and have reinforcing supports installed if necessary
  • Cover doors and windows to prevent broken glass and damage from flying debris. Consider installing storm windows.
  • Inspect your roof and make sure that at least six nails or staples hold down each shingle beneath the edges of the overlapping shingles. Install a waterproof underlayment under the shingles to prevent water from entering the structure in the event the wind blows the shingles off the roof.
  • Remove trees too close to the home
  • Make sure your rain gutters and downspouts are secured to the house and are in good working order

Can you recall the last time you inspected the exterior of your home for possible signs of water intrusion? Some examples of water intrusion include water entering the home through cracks in the foundation, damaged roofs, rain gutters, and leaking windowsills and door frames. SERVPRO® of Moorhead responds to water intrusion emergencies every year in Georgetown.

Repair and protect your home’s exterior

Skunk Odor Issue in Dilworth Business?

10/25/2021 (Permalink)

A striped skunk is shown. We specialize in removing foul odors in Clay County.

There is nothing more off-putting than the smell of a skunk. Skunks’ reputation precedes them, and their ability to spray their awful scent is their only defense mechanism. Other animals know to give skunks a wide berth to avoid getting sprayed. Domestic pets, unfortunately, learn the hard way about skunks. When your pet gets sprayed and enters the house, the skunk odor will spread and permeate into clothing, upholstery, drapes, and carpeting. Yuk!

SERVPRO® of Moorhead’s technicians are trained and certified in odor removal by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), the nonprofit certifying body for the cleaning and restoration industry. Skunk and other offensive odors are natural turn-offs, so it is vital to determine the source of the odor and take immediate steps to neutralize and remove the nasty smell.

We have the training and equipment to identify odors from inside and outside a structure and determine the conditions where it comes into contact with surfaces. While other companies may use chemicals to “mask” offensive odors, our technicians have access to several odor removal products capable of penetrating surfaces to neutralize any unpleasant smell.

Power Outage Preparedness for Hawley?

10/18/2021 (Permalink)

A candle is lit in a dark room. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Clay County.

Power outages can happen at any time in Hawley. SERVPRO® of Moorhead responds to storm damage emergencies every year, and in many cases, there was no power when we arrived. Here are some tips for preparing for a power outage from the American Red Cross:

Create a support network. Identify people who can help you stay at home or evacuate during an extended power outage. Keep a paper copy of your contact list.

Stay connected and alert. Sign up for alert systems and apps for text alerts. Have communication devices that work without home power, including a crank or battery radio, a non-cordless home phone, chargers/batteries for your cell phones and your computers.

Stock food and water. Store non-perishable food and water supplies for at least two weeks. Plan to use coolers and ice to extend food refrigeration and keep a thermometer in the fridge, freezer, or cooler to monitor the food temperature.

Know and plan for your personal and medical electrical needs. Take an inventory of your electrical needs. Consider backup and non-power alternatives for lighting, communication, medical devices, refrigerated medicine, cooking, garage doors, locks, and elevators. Discuss a plan with your doctors for your medical needs.

Halloween Party safety Tips for Moorhead?

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

A Halloween party is in full swing. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Clay County.

Spooky Halloween fun for all!

SERVPRO® of Moorhead responds to more fire damage emergencies during the holiday season than at any other time of the year in Clay County, and some of these fires may have been prevented.

Here are some Halloween safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Use a battery-operated candle or glow stick in jack-o-lanterns
  • Dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper catch fire easily. Keep all decorations away from open flames and other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters.
  • When using electrical lighting to decorate your home, ensure it is used following the manufacturer’s instructions. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.
  • Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged
  • Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes. Make sure all smoke alarms are working.

For families planning to attend Halloween parties or go trick-or-treating:

  • When choosing costumes, stay away from long trailing fabric that could come in contact with open flames or other heat sources
  • Teach children to stay away from open flames, including jack-o-lanterns with candles in them
  • Provide children with flashlights to carry for lighting or glow sticks as part of their costumes

Water Intrusion in Glyndon?

10/4/2021 (Permalink)

A person is caulking around a window. We restore water damage in Clay County 24-hours a day.

Stormy weather is coming to Glyndon, and homeowners can minimize the potential for water intrusion. SERVPRO® of Moorhead offers these tips from the Insurance Information Institute to keep your home protected from unwanted water:

You can prevent water from entering your home by inspecting your home’s exterior for any place where water can enter the home and making repairs as needed.

  • Caulk and seal windows
  • Inspect the roof for missing and aging shingles
  • Check your rain gutters and remove any debris that may be clogging them
  • Check your downspouts and clear any clogs and make sure they are draining away from the house
  • Gutter guards are a good way to prevent clogs and water intrusion into the house
  • Check your sprinkler systems and make sure they are not spraying water into the house and that water is not pooling around the home’s foundation

Check to see that water can drain away from your home. Water is invasive and will seep into a structure easily when water is allowed to stand around your home’s foundation. Water-saturated soil can allow water to enter the foundation wall through any cracks.

Sewage Backup in Barnesville?

7/28/2021 (Permalink)

A toilet in a clean bathroom is shown. We respond to sewage backup 24-hours a day in Clay County.

Did you know there are three classifications for contaminated water? Sewage backups are classified as “black water.”  SERVPRO® of Moorhead responds to sewage backups 24-hours a day in Barnesville. Here is some information on contaminated water from our website:

Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 “Black Water” is grossly unsanitary and can cause severe illness or death if ingested. Any contact should be avoided. Sources for black water include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

Category 2: "Gray Water"

This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

Category 1: "Clean Water"

This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.

Thunderstorm Winds in Sabin?

Do you know that thunderstorm warnings should be treated just like a tornado warning?  SERVPRO® of Moorhead responds to storm damage emergencies throughout the year and we have witnessed firsthand the damage thunderstorm winds can cause to a structure.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), thunderstorms can produce strong wind gusts that have been known to exceed 100 miles per hour. Here are some more interesting facts about thunderstorm winds from the NOAA:

  • Thunderstorms should be treated like you would a tornado. Move to an appropriate shelter if you’re in the path of the storm.
  • The strong outrush of wind from a thunderstorm is often called a downburst. Downbursts are caused by rain-cooled air, which accelerates rapidly downward, producing a potentially damaging gust of wind.
  • Strong downbursts are often mistaken for tornadoes. They can produce extensive damage and are often accompanied by a roaring sound similar to a tornado. Downbursts can easily overturn mobile homes, tear roofs off of houses, and topple trees.

Mold in Moorhead?

SERVPRO® of Moorhead has been helping Moorhead businesses mitigate and remediate mold problems for years. Mold can spread quickly to other areas if it is not contained quickly, sometimes in as little as forty-eight hours. Here are some facts for understanding mold from our website:

Understanding Mold

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or air conditioning and heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce health effects.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed, or the mold may return
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth
  • Keep indoor humidity below forty-five percent

When you need help with a mold infestation, SERVPRO® of Moorhead is ready to assist commercial business owners with mold mitigation and remediation services day or night. I am grateful for indoor plumbing!

At SERVPRO® of Moorhead, we respond to water damage emergencies throughout the year, and some of these emergencies could have been prevented. Here are some tips from the Institute for Business and Home Safety to prevent water damage:

  • Never pour grease down the drain.
  • Plant trees away from lateral drain lines to prevent roots from damaging piping.
  • If your home’s sewer system is connected to the city’s sewer system—a particular problem for older homes—or if you are located downhill or below street level, contact a plumbing professional to install a backflow prevention assembly into your sewer system.
  • Call a professional if you notice signs of a plumbing problem—an increased monthly water bill, banging pipes, rust stains, moisture in the walls or on the floor, and signs of wet soil erosion near the foundation.

1941 Blizzard

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has a great website that provides information on Minnesota climate, nature, temperatures, and a host of general statistics and summaries. In their historic weather events section, they describe a terrible blizzard that occurred on March 14 to 15 in 1941. This blizzard hit the western counties hard. Eighty-five mile-per-hour winds were recorded at Grand Forks.

Up until this time, regional forecasts for the Minnesota area were under Chicago's jurisdiction, but this blizzard changed this. From this point on, Minnesota acquired the responsibility to dictate its own regional forecasts and procedures.

Snow Load Challenges in Moorhead?

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

A large red snow removal device is being used to remove snow from a roof. We mitigate water damage in Glyndon 24-hours a day.

Snow Load Challenges

I never knew there were so many techniques for removing snow from roofs until I watched a series of YouTube videos on the subject. There were people using lengths of rope or wire to saw the snow off the roof and some people in Japan were using devices that look like upside-down folding chairs to pick up big stacks of snow and dump them off the roof. SERVPRO® of Moorhead responds to water damage emergencies throughout the year, and we understand the challenges heavy snow and the winter months bring to Moorhead residents.

According to an article published by the University of Minnesota Extension (UMN), knowing the snow load your home is built to is important. If your home is built to current codes, there should be no problem, and your roof should be able to carry snow loads. The article relates that in Minnesota, building plans are required to meet snow load specifications in order to receive a building permit, so you can check with the city building inspection office to see if your house plans are on file.

Graffiti Defacing Convenience Store in Downer?

2/22/2021 (Permalink)

Pink and black spray-painted graffiti mar the wall of a local business. We provide many specialty-cleaning services in Moorhead.

The Writing is on the Wall in Downer

According to a study done by the United States Justice Department, there are high costs associated with cleanup and prevention, and few graffiti offenders are apprehended. And the initial appearance of graffiti in one location appears to attract more graffiti. Graffiti also dissuades customers from entering stores, riding on public transit, and contributes to declines in property value, presenting the appearance of blight.

SERVPRO® of Moorhead’s restoration technicians are trained to remove vandalism from homes and commercial businesses quickly and safely from:

According to a report from Purdue University, static electricity can cause flash fires while refueling, causing personal injury and property damage. In cold winter environments, people exit and re-enter their vehicles during the refueling process, and this can cause enough static electricity to build up to create a spark and cause a flash fire. Yikes!

  • Always turn off your vehicle engine while refueling.

Roof Leak in Glyndon?

A technician is on top of a roof replacing damaged roof shingles. Moorhead residents rely on us to respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day!

Climbing the roof?

I didn’t realize that my Glyndon home had a roof leak until I went up into the attic to put away the Christmas decorations. Sure enough, water was pooling on the attic floor in a couple of places, and on closer inspection I found that some roof shingles had blown off during the last storm. The water had saturated the insulation and weakened the attic floor where the water was pooling. I called SERVPRO® of Moorhead, and they came out and in no time had repaired the roof shingles, replaced the soggy insulation, and replaced the damaged floorboards in the attic.

A little routine maintenance can help prevent water damage caused by missing or damaged roof shingles. Here are some maintenance tips from Angieslist.com for maintaining your roof:

  • Your insurance won't cover damage caused by improper maintenance, it’s good to keep your roof in tip-top shape.
  • Have your roof inspected regularly by a trained roofing professional who can watch for areas that need repair.
  • Keep the roof clear of debris, such as leaves and sticks. Keep your gutters clean.
  • Remove any dead trees on your property that could possibly fall on your roof.

Electrical safety is especially important during the winter months as this is when most electrical fires occur.

SERVPRO® of Moorhead responds to fire damage emergencies often during the winter months, and we know the damage an electrical fire can do to a home. According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), half of all home electrical fires involve equipment or home electrical wiring. Here are some electrical fire safety tips from the NFPA to keep you and your loved ones safe this winter:

  • Plug only one heat-producing appliance (like a coffee maker, space heater, or microwave) directly into a wall outlet at a time.
  • Never use an extension cord with a heat-producing appliance.
  • Extension cords should only be used temporarily.
  • Inspect electrical cords for fraying and replace damaged cords.
  • Have an electrician install additional wall outlets where you need them.

SERVPRO of Moorhead wants you to be aware of the causes of fire damage and fire injuries so that you can help prevent them.

Top Causes of Fires in Moorhead:

Tips for Staying Safe During a Storm

12/17/2020 (Permalink)

lightning strike on building SERVPRO of Moorhead is Here To Help.

Common safety rules and precautions state that the public should generally try to stay inside of a safe area or building when a lightning storm or thunderstorm occurs. There are many commercial buildings in the Moorhead area. SERVPRO® of Moorhead wants to share the following safety tips for staying safe during a thunderstorm while inside a commercial building:

  • Stay away from all windows or glass walls, especially during a lightning storm
  • Unplug appliances if possible
  • Pay attention to all alerts and warnings, as a thunderstorm can develop into a tornado if powerful enough
  • Avoid running water if possible since electricity can travel through plumbing

Weather is unpredictable. Although the weather can be predicted, it can also change in an instant without much warning. If a thunderstorm does happen to turn into tornado weather in Moorhead, consider the following tips:

  • If the commercial building has a basement or storm cellar, head there immediately
  • Use your arms to protect your head and neck in the event of flying debris or shattered windows
  • Do not leave the safe area until the local alerting system says it is safe to do so

Remember, SERVPRO of Moorhead is here to help. Our trained team members will show up ready to go and can assist in cleanup and restoration after a thunderstorm, lightning storm, and even a tornado.

Floods in Moorhead:

Floods are the most common natural disaster in the U.S.  Flooding can happen near major bodies of water, but also inland.

Floods can develop slowly or quickly. Floods that come with no warning are known as flash floods.

Floods:

  • Come from rain, snow, hurricanes, tornadoes, and storm surges
  • Overflows of dams or other water systems
  • Can cause power or water outages
  • Damage buildings
  • Create landslides
  • Make roads impassable
  • Sweep away people, animals, or cars

If you are in a flood in Moorhead:

  • If you have a warning, get to a safe place
  • Don’t drive around barricades
  • Don’t walk, swim, or drive through flood waters.  SERVPRO of Moorhead likes the warning, “Turn around! Don’t Drown!”
  • 6 inches of moving water can knock a person down. 12 inches of moving water can sweep a car away
  • Stay off bridges over fast-moving water. The water can wash bridges away
  • If your car is trapped in quickly-moving water, stay inside. If the water rises inside the vehicle, climb onto the roof
  • If you are trapped in a building, go to the highest level. Do NOT climb into a closed attic. Floodwater can trap you. Go to the roof only if there is no other escape

graphic with mold and mildew words on it SERVPRO of Moorhead is Here To Help.

Mold & Mildew in Moorhead

Although both are types of fungi, SERVPRO of Moorhead wants to point out some differences between mold and mildew.  Some kinds of fungi are okay, like mushrooms (if you like mushrooms). Some kinds of fungi are definitely not okay, like athlete’s foot. Molds can be useful: penicillin, anyone?  Mildew is never useful.

Moorhead residents can educate themselves about mold and mildew.

What it looks like

Mold

  • Usually fuzzy
  • May be brown, yellow, gray, black, white, green, or blue

Mildew

  • Usually grows in a flat pattern
  • May look powdery or downy
  • Powdery mildew usually starts out white, & often turns yellow, brown, or black
  • Downy mildew usually starts out yellow, then turns brown.

What is not good

Mold

  • Can cause damage to homes
  • May cause health problems
  • May be smelly

Mildew

  • Can damage plants & crops
  • May cause health problems
  • May be smelly

What is not bad

Mold

  • Might be edible (grilled portobello tonight?)
  • Some are used in making cheeses

Mildew

  • Not a thing

Possible Causes for Water Damage in Moorhead

11/11/2020 (Permalink)

Causes & Categories of Water Damage in Moorhead:

An old poem has the line, “water, water, everywhere”. When you need to say this in your home or office, you know there is trouble. You may be looking at water damage. There are several different possible causes of water damage in Moorhead.

Causes can include:

  • Leaky dishwashers or washing machines
  • Clogged pipes
  • Leaking roofs
  • Broken toilet pipes
  • Heavy rain
  • Snow or ice

The amount of water damage depends on the amount of water and on the cause of the damage.

It is also important to start cleanup as soon as possible. The longer your home or business is water-logged, the more damage.

Categories of Water Damage in Moorhead:

  1. Clean water. It might come from an overflowing sink or a broken appliance. The water does not pose a threat to people. Keep in mind that any water will become contaminated after it stops flowing.
  2. Gray water. This water is contaminated from the get-go. It comes from broken toilets or sump pumps. It might not look dirty, or it might be brown.
  3. Black water. Like gray water, it might not look dirty. One major source of black water is broken sewage pipes. Another source is any water that has been standing still.

Fried Turkey Fire in Hawley?

A man is shown placing a turkey in a boiling vat of oil. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Moorhead!

Turkey Fried Blues

This guy in the picture has the right idea. He has gloves on, and he has the turkey fryer set up outside of his home on nonflammable rocks. But the turkey is not completely thawed, he has way too much oil in the fryer, and he is way too close to that wooden fence behind him. Uh oh, I have a feeling this guy is going to be visited by emergency responders soon! SERVPRO® of Moorhead has seen firsthand the property damage that turkey fryers cause, and we have been restoring fire damage in the Hawley area for years. Our team of highly trained technicians is on call 24 hours a day, every day, and oftentimes we work alongside the first responders in fire damage situations.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), in 2017 there were 1600 reported home cooking fires on Thanksgiving. The NFPA strongly discourages the use of turkey fryers because they can cause severe burns, injuries, and property damage. They recommend forgoing the home turkey fryer and getting a fried turkey from a grocery store, restaurant, or other food retailer.

To help prevent fire damage, SERVPRO of Moorhead shares these tips. They make more sense than not cooking at home.

  • Many kitchen items can catch fire, including: dish towels, oven mitts, recipes, wooden tools, and loose clothing
  • Never operate the stove or oven when you are tired or have been drinking alcohol
  • If you are frying, broiling, grilling, or boiling food, stay in the kitchen. If you leave, even for a short time, turn off the heat

Odor Removal in Glyndon?

10/19/2020 (Permalink)

The nose of a large dog can be seen poking through a fence. We have the training and equipment to remove any offensive odor in Moorhead.

Dog Gone Blues

My dog Rocky gets bored easily, but he manages to keep himself entertained most of the time. However, today I was not amused when I came home from grocery shopping in Glyndon, and my house looked like a crime scene. Rocky managed to tip over the garbage pail and scatter the entire contents all over my kitchen and living room. There were chewed bits of paper, dog-teeth-dented soup cans, mauled take-out containers, and lots of other detritus too chewed up to identify. Not only did the house reek, but Rocky also reeked, so he went outside while I called SERVPRO® of Moorhead. They sent out a team of odor restoration technicians, and they went to work immediately.

They were able to locate the odors and used products specific to each different scent they identified. They removed all the garbage and cleaned and deodorized all of the surfaces. When they were through, you would never know that there had been a stinky mess in my house! Rocky had to stay outside until he could get a bath, but hopefully, he learned his lesson.

Control Moisture to Help Stop Mold Growth in Moorhead

mold in a petri dish If mold has you feeling like you are in a petri dish, call SERVPRO of Moorhead.

Condensation and Mold in Moorhead.

There are many different kinds of mold. EVERY SINGLE ONE needs moisture to grow.

Mold doesn’t need a storm or flood. Even a tiny bit of dampness is enough for mold.

Have you seen condensed water on the inside of a window? Have you noticed water droplets near the shower?  That water is more than enough for mold to start growing.

SERVPRO of Moorhead wants you to know: if you control moisture, you control mold.

Control Moisture:

  • Clean spills or leaks quickly. Mold can start growing within 24 hours
  • Make sure roof gutters are in good shape
  • Don’t let water collect around the house foundation
  • Don’t let water collect in the air-conditioner drip pans
  • Keep drains clear
  • Indoor humidity should be under 40%
  • Wipe condensation from windows, pipes, or walls

SERVPRO of Moorhead offers these suggestions:

  • Use exhaust fans
  • Use air conditioners and/or dehumidifiers. Low humidity reduces condensation
  • Use the bathroom fan when you shower
  • Appliances should vent to the outside. Even stoves, washers and dryers produce water vapor

SERVPRO of Moorhead has ideas on reducing condensation:

  • Increase air movement
    • Open doors & windows
    • Use fans
  • Insulate cold surfaces like water pipes
  • Keep  the temperature comfortable

Hidden Water Damage in Moorhead?

10/13/2020 (Permalink)

A water-damaged ceiling is shown with cracked paint and soggy drywall. We are Moorhead’s trusted water restoration specialists.

Water Condensation Caused This?

One morning I looked up at my ceiling in Barnesville and saw a soggy mess! I wasn’t sure what could be causing the water leaking above as there were no pipes or plumbing in that area of the house. I called SERVPRO® of Moorhead, and they came out quickly to assess and repair the damage.

My air conditioner unit had a clogged condensate drain line! (Who knew that this was even a thing?) I also found out that I’m not supposed to run the air conditioner while there are open windows in the house as this will cause water condensation in the air conditioning unit, which can spill off of the drain pan and cause water damage to happen.

Thankfully the water restoration technicians were able to repair and restore the damage to my ceiling, and by the time the repairs were completed a couple of days later, you couldn’t tell there had ever been water damage at all.

An image of the face of a clock is shown time elapsed, giving the appearance of time flying by. Our 24-hour emergency service saves Moorhead residents time and money!

Every Second Counts

I heard the Moorhead Fire Department sirens before I saw them pull onto my street. Then I saw the smoke coming from my neighbors’ garage. The firefighters extinguished the fire, which was contained to the garage, and were completing some paperwork when I saw the crew from SERVPRO® of Moorhead arrive. I was amazed by how quickly they responded, and I watched as one team member spoke with the first responders and my neighbor, while the rest of the team immediately began the cleanup and restoration process. In less than two hours they had tarped the fire-damaged roof, boarded up the broken side window, removed the contents of the garage, extracted the water left from the firefighters, and cleaned up the soot and smoke! The next day they repaired the minor structural damage, and when they were done, you couldn’t tell a fire had ever happened!

Our team of highly trained restoration technicians is on call 24 hours a day, every day. We know that repairs can become more expensive if left too long before mitigating the damage.

home with flood waters in front When water damage strikes trust SERVPRO of Moorhead.

Staying Healthy Around Standing Water in Moorhead:

Standing water of any kind in Moorhead can be a powerful source of disease. Floods can be worse due to the amount of water involved. Even small puddles can pose a risk.

Different kinds of debris can be found in floodwaters such as dead animals, rotted plants, and sewage, to name a few. If you have water damage inside your home, watch for debris in the home as well to include rotted food and electrical problems.

Viruses and bacteria can cause illnesses. To reduce your chances of catching something, SERVPRO of Moorhead suggests:

  • Washing dirty clothes and towels in hot water. Use bleach if possible
  • Remember that you can shake hands with an infected person and get infected.
  • Do not allow children to play in the flood water
  • Wash children’s hands before meals
  • Disinfect toys before letting children play with them
  • Use bleach or other disinfectants on hard surfaces
  • Keep your hands washed

Cuts and rashes can become infected. Protect yourself and others in Moorhead:

  • Avoid floodwaters if you have an open rash or a cut
  • Clean cuts or rashes. Cover them with a waterproof bandage
  • Clean cuts with soap and clean water
  • If a cut becomes red, swollen, or is oozing, get medical attention

Thunderstorm preparedness in Moorhead

10/1/2020 (Permalink)

Lighting striking through the sky Although you cannot prevent thunderstorms, you can prepare for them. SERVPRO of Moorhead wants to help you be prepared.

Thunderstorms are beautiful, but they can also be dangerous.  They can cause severe damage to your home and property in Moorhead. Thunderstorms include lightning and can:

  • Include winds over 50 MPH
  • Create hail
  • Cause flash floods
  • Cause tornadoes

In most places, a thunderstorm can happen at any time of the year, and at any time of the day.

SERVPRO of Moorhead knows you cannot prevent a thunderstorm, but you can prepare:

  • Know the risk for thunderstorms in Moorhead
  • Sign up for your community’s warning system
  • Cut down or trim trees that may fall on your home or office
  • Install surge protectors, lightning rods, or a lightning protection system

SERVPRO of Moorhead repeats the warning, “When thunder roars, go indoors”.  You don’t have to wait for the thunder. If there is a thunderstorm warning, go inside. Once there:

  • Unplug appliances
  • Do not use landline phones in office or home
  • Pay attention to alerts and warnings

If you can’t get inside a building:

  • If you are swimming or in a boat, get to land immediately.  Find shelter
  • If you are in a car, don’t touch anything metal
  • “Turn around. Don’t Drown. '' Avoid flooded roads. 6 inches of moving water can knock you down. One foot of moving water can sweep away your car.

A lightning strike during a thunderstorm can leave a wake of destruction in its path. This can range from minor electrical issues to fire damage. Lightning is also a major cause of injury or death from weather-related dangers.  Most people survive being hit by lightning, but they often have long-term problems.
